Christopher Webb

Christopher Webb is a social and economic geographer teaching in the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at Carleton University, Ottawa. His research explores geographies of youth, urban inequalities, educational markets and unemployment in South Africa. He completed his doctorate in human geography at the University of Toronto, where his thesis, Liberating the Family: Education, Aspiration and Resistance among South African University Students, examined debt, social mobility and politicization among young South Africans. He holds a SSHRC postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Anthropology at the London School of Economics, where he is investigating the relationship between social protection policy and technologies of financial inclusion in Southern Africa.


His research has been published in the Review of African Political Economy, Area, the Global Labour Journal and the Journal of Peasant Studies among others. He is a regular contributor to the popular website Africa Is A Country. He has worked as a newspaper journalist, trade union organizer and book editor.
