Mariam Ahmed

I am a second-year undergraduate student living in Vancouver. I am interested in activism related to Palestinian human rights, the dangers of corporate exploitation, and imperialistic Western foreign policy in the Middle East, Latin American, and beyond. One of my biggest take away from engaging in activism is realizing the interconnectedness between different struggles and how people, regardless of geographic boundaries, can be oppressed in similar ways by the same structures. For instance, the ways in which the capitalist system excludes and marginalizes poor people in my hometown, Cairo, is similar to how it marginalizes people in Vancouver's Downtown East-side.

We acknowledge that the Centre for Urban Youth Research is located on the unceded and unsurrendered territories of the Algonquin-Anishnaabe peoples. As guests in this territory, we strive to work in collaboration and solidarity with the Algonquin peoples and other Indigenous, First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples on Turtle Island and globally to advance the recognition of truth and the fulfilment of (re)conciliation.
